Firm Profile

FIRM PROFILE

The Office of Ted Tokio Tanaka Architects has been internationally recognized for the architecture, master planning and urban design of projects in Asia, Europe and North America. In the past thirty years, the office has received many prestigious design awards and honors and has been widely published throughout four continents. Projects have included civic centers and public buildings; academic, educational and recreational facilities; health care facilities; transportation facilities; resort developments; striking commercial facilities; and unique housing and residences.

The Office has strong commitments to both excellence in design and responsiveness to clients’ needs. Each of the projects has a unique architectural character that evolves from and draws upon the specific circumstances surrounding its design: the aspirations and requirements of the client, the nature and opportunities of the site, the physical and economic context. With each project, we seek a design solution that has a timeless quality and is sensitive to the community it joins.

By carefully maintaining a medium-sized practice, we assure a balance between high quality architectural services, tailored technical expertise, dedication to the details of construction, sensitivity to cultural influences, and a great degree of personal attention for each project. Design Principal, Ted Tokio Tanaka, FAIA, is thoroughly involved in all phases of every project and develops each design in close coordination with the client, our staff, and the project team. There is a consonance of design excellence and elegance throughout the broad range of projects which Ted Tokio Tanaka has led. The careful balancing between eastern and western design and cultural inclination is a signature aspect of this body of work.

The firm is a closely integrated professional practice in which specialists in planning, design, computer aided design, construction methods and materials, design/build practices, and project management collaborate closely on every project. Consultant teams are carefully selected for each project to assist in thoroughly exploring and creatively and efficiently developing optimum design solutions for each client.

Ted Tokio Tanaka Architects has designed countless public, private, commercial and residential projects in the Greater Los Angeles region as well as abroad. Their urban planning and design projects to date include: Los Angeles International Airport Beautification Enhancements Projects; Urban Design and Final Station Design of the Little Tokyo / Arts District Redline Subway and Light Rail Stations for the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s Eastside Extension Project; and currently working on the Beverly Hills and Century City Subway Stations as part of the Metro Purple Line ; numerous Campus-wide Beautification Projects for the Los Angeles Community College District; Champagne Apartment Tower for the Irvine Company; Banning’s Landing Community Center for the Port of Los Angeles; Trowbridge Town Center in England; Shirane Kogen Ski Resort in Japan; and numerous award-winning residential housings in Southern California as well as in Japan.
